West Australian Lions plan to raise $100K for bushfire relief!

Following the devastating bushfires at Margaret River where 40 homes were lost, DG Stuart MacFadyen (W1) and I toured the area and attended the Margaret River Lions Shed to assist with the sorting of donated clothing. This was followed by a meeting of the Margaret River and Cowaramup Lions to establish a protocol for assistance to those residents – in immediate need of essentials such as food, toiletries, clothing, bedding and hand tools for the cleanup.

To put it bluntly, what they require is not clothing but money!

Government assistance and insurance will take care of the rebuilding of houses but it is anticipated that over 100 locals  require help for the next few months just to exist.

To say I was blown away by the infrastructure already in place at the Margaret River Lions Shed would be a classic understatement!  President Lawrence Thompson and his fellow Lions and in-numerable volunteers are working around the clock to assist these bushfire victims and are to be commended on a fantastic effort.

The Australian Lions Foundation (ALF) has already pledged $20,000 to this fire relief and in addition to the Margaret River Lions Bushfire Appeal which was originated by the local Club.

If clubs would like to help, information on the Margaret River Bushfire appeal is available here.

My goal is to raise $100,000 and the funds are already rolling in – so I appeal to all Presidents to request your own Club donate to this very worthwhile appeal. Imagine with Christmas just around the corner,  if your house was burnt down and you and your family had to start from scratch?

I have two king single little girl beds, that look brand new, with unicorns on them – just lovely. Do you have any famiies that could use them at all? I would be happy to buy new matresses and linen for them to make the full bed complete.

Sorry for the late reply. Any donations of goods can be given to the Lions club shed, Burton Road Margaret River. Gates open at 8:30-4:30 weekdays. We endeavour to pass them onto the families that have lost homes but cannot guarantee this as most seem to prefer new goods and at the moment have no homes to put their new stuff in. Most seem to be in temporary accomodation. With any donations that we are able to sell at our garage sales the money is being put to good use.
